Helping Young Players Take
Their Game to the Next Level
Next Gen Hoops is a focused basketball development program
designed for players ages 10–13 who love the game and want to improve
their skills.
Many young athletes play in house leagues but rarely receive structured
instruction on the fundamentals that make great players. Next Gen Hoops
bridges that gap by teaching skills, technique, and basketball IQ in a fun
but focused environment.
Our goal is to help young athletes develop the confidence, habits, and
knowledge needed to elevate their game, whether they eventually
pursue competitive basketball or simply want to become stronger players.
What Will Players Learn?
Ball Handling & Control
We teach players to dribble confidently with both hands, change direction effectively, and protect the ball in all situations.
Shooting Fundamentals
Players learn proper shooting mechanics through balanced form, footwork into shots, and confident finishing around the rim.
Passing & Decision Making
We teach players accurate passing techniques while helping them develop strong court awareness.
Offensive Skills & Footwork
Players build a strong offensive foundation through triple‑threat positioning, jab steps, and space‑creating moves.
Defensive Fundamentals
Training focuses on the habits great defenders rely on, including stance, positioning, and help-defense principles.
Basketball IQ
Players begin understanding how the game truly works by learning spacing, reading defenders, and choosing when to pass, drive, or shoot.
Coach Aquil
Coach Aquil is a dedicated youth basketball coach and community leader with extensive experience
developing players within the West Island basketball community.
Over the last ten years with the West Island Lakers Basketball Association (WILBA), Coach Aquil has
held several key leadership roles, including
Division Manager for the Boys House League,
Facilities & Operations Coordinator, and Vice-President of the Boys House League.
He
also served on the Board of Directors for five years. Through these responsibilities, Coach Aquil
has helped guide league programming, strengthen player development initiatives, and contribute to
the continued growth of youth basketball in the West Island community.
At the competitive level within WILBA, Coach Aquil has coached teams across multiple divisions,
including Bantam AA, Bantam AAA, Cadet AAA, and Juvenile AAA. This gave him extensive
experience working with players as they progress toward higher levels of competition. Beyond
WILBA, he contributes his expertise to
Vanier College’s Division 2 summer development
program
. Throughout the academic year, Coach Aquil also coaches the
Juvenile Boys team at
Kuper Academy
and leads basketball development programs for young boys and girls at
Kuper
Elementary School.
Through his years of coaching young athletes, Coach Aquil has seen that many players who love the
game often lack access to structured skill development. This
realization inspired him to create Next Gen Hoops, a program designed to provide focused training
that helps young players build strong fundamentals, improve their basketball IQ, and develop
confidence in their abilities.
Next Gen Hoops approaches youth basketball with a philosophy that emphasizes building the right
habits early. Proper ball handling, shooting mechanics, footwork, defensive fundamentals, and smart
decision-making help players develop the skills and mindset
needed to elevate their game.
Coach Aquil’s mission with Next Gen Hoops is to help young players build a strong
foundation in the game. They develop better basketball skills, but also confidence, discipline,
and a deeper understanding of teamwork that will benefit them both on the court and in life.
